Sir Lancelot
One of the greatest and noblest knights in the Arthurian tales. He was known
as Lancelot of the Lake because the Lady of the Lake had plunged him into a
magic pool when he was a child. Sir Lancelot was a very handsome knight, many women were attracted to him. The Irish warrior Diarmuid Ua Duibhne and Morgan Le Fay who was Arthurs half sister cast a spell over the sleeping knight and shut him in a dungeon. They demanded that he must choose amongst themselves and two other enchantress's to be his mistress. Sir Lancelot turned them all down and admitted his love for Guinevere to them.
For a while Guinevere would not let him come to her but eventually they
became lovers. Sir Meliagaunt, one of Arthur's Knights, became suspicious of
them and confronted Sir Lancelot in the presence of King Arthur and Queen
Guinevere. A tournament was held to discover the truth. Lancelot split
Meliagaunt's head in two and the reputation of Queen Guinevere remained
unblemished. Other Knights were also suspicious of Lancelot and Guinevere.
Sir Agravain and Sir Modred (Arthur's nephew) led twelve Knights to
Guinevere's chamber and caught the lovers together.
After saving Guinevere from being burnt to death and retreating to Brittany
Lancelot met up with Guinevere only once more before renouncing the ways of
war and living his life out as a hermit.
